The Vampire Diaries Speculation: What Will Elijah Do With the Cure?
Among the many surprises to come at us courtesy of last week’s The Vampire Diaries “American Gothic” episode was the return of Elijah Mikaelson (Daniel Gillies). This well-dressed Original appeared to have taken a page from Justin Timberlake’s book, donning suit and tie for a prearranged tete-a-tete. He arrived at the local town gazebo for a meeting with Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev), his new paramour. But it wasn’t the sassiest doppelganger on the planet there to greet him.
In spite of stealing her stylish supernatural relation’s footwear, there was no fooling Elijah. When he noticed Katherine’s missing daylight protection, he knew the truth. He hadn’t just kissed Katherine — he had kissed Elena (Nina Dobrev).
The glimpse into Elijah’s love life was fun and it was also awesome to see him and
Elena do what they do best after the awkward liplock — parlay with mutual respect. But for all the awesomeness of these moments, the one that has all avid watchers of the show on tenterhooks was the reunion between Elijah and Rebekah (Claire Holt).
We love to see siblings united. Although admittedly, when those siblings are members of the Mikaelson clan it’s a bit more uh, how you say, complicated? Add to the mix that Elijah’s return means one more person with their own potential set of reasons for wanting to get their mitts on the Cure and what you get is a bit of a delicious mess.
When we left him, Elijah was driving back to Mystic Falls, Rebekah and the Cure in tow. While originally Elijah’s plan with Katherine had been to deliver the Cure to Klaus (Joseph Morgan) for fun and profit, that might change now that he knows how desperately his little sister wants to be human. Elijah has always been one of the more empathic members of the Mikaelson family, so it seems fitting that he’d grant his sister her one true wish.
But given how complicated his family dynamics have been for literally thousands of years (imagine the Thanksgivings, you guys) it’s not hard to imagine Elijah going through with his first plan and selling the Cure to Klaus. He’d be sure to have enough money to get the heck out of dodge, and after Katherine’s tearful apology and seemingly heartfelt gift of the Cure to him, he might be willing to give her a second third chance.
The odds of Elijah taking the Cure himself seem to be slim — but there is another possibility. He and Elena have long had a bond of their own. Seeing her with her emotions shut off might be just the impetus Elijah needs to join up with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) and make her mortal again. Whatever happens - it’s bound to be jaw-dropping!
