The Vampire Diaries Speculation: Is Caroline Helping or Hurting Klaus?

Caroline and Bloody Klaus in Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 18, “American Gothic”

Our jaws dropped when we saw the sneak peek photos for The Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 18, “American Gothic.” Not only was Elijah (Daniel Gillies) looking utterly dapper in his suit, Caroline (Candice Accola) was alone with a shirtless Klaus (Joseph Morgan).
We have no idea what’s going on, but we’re going to do some analysis of each photo and try to figure it out.

The last time we saw Klaus, he was getting the indestructible white oak stake broken off in his back by Silas/Shane (David Alpay). The tip was likely still lodged in there, so perhaps Caroline is being helpful by removing it?

Vampire Barbie certainly seems worried about the guy she’s been chiding for killing his own hybrids. Maybe her own recent murder spree has given her a change of heart?

So Caroline is clearly colluding with Klaus, and they get physically closer. Is this a prelude to a kiss?

In addition to getting a better look at his jewelry (and tattoos), this shirtless version of Klaus is probably more terrified than we’ve seen him before. But what — or who — has him so spooked?

Whatever’s going on, it brings Klaus to his knees.

The promo video also offers a bit of insight. “I will bring you nothing but misery,” Caroline tells the shirtless hybrid, who’s on all fours, in a quick snippet.

Frankly, it doesn’t really sound like Caroline. And how could she bring Klaus nothing but misery? She’s delightful. Perhaps that bit of white oak did some psychological damage to Klaus, and he’s hallucinating? Rebekah(Claire Holt) had a similar reaction to the werewolf-venom-laced beer: It didn’t kill her, but it did make her see some truly terrifying things.
