‘Vampire Diaries’: Damon & Elena’s Search For Katherine Ends In Tragedy

Vampire Diaries Silas Massacre

Plus, Silas calls on Bonnie for his third massacre! Is there no stopping him?
Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) took a bite out of the Big Apple on the March 21 episode of The Vampire Diaries, indulging in all the usual tourist activities: feeding on innocent New Yorkers, hunting down the cure for vampirism, and — for whatever reason — getting tacky pink highlights. Like, really tacky. But when they weren’t painting the town red, literally, Damon was regaling his girlfriend with tales from his days in 1970s New York — including his secret fling with Lexi (Arielle Kebbel)! I know, I was surprised too.

My surprise lessened, however, when we learned Damon was only faking his feelings for Lexi in order to get her off his back. Stefan (Paul Wesley) had sent her to NYC to fix Damon, which obviously didn’t sit too well with him. Suddenly, I totally understand why Damon eventually killed her.

Damon and Elena’s big-city trip took a delightfully twisted turn when Rebekah
(Claire Holt) showed up, armed with more than just her usual zingers and a healthy thirst for booze. Blondie had a plan, and it involved snapping Damon’s neck and skipping town with Elena to search for Katherine. It was like Thelma and Louise, only better! (Because we all know Ian Somerhalder is worth a million young Brad Pitts.)

Forget The Originals; Can we get an Elena-Rebekah spin-off please?!

Meanwhile, Back In Mystic Falls…
Bonnie (Kat Graham) discovered a super-unfortunate loophole in Silas’ plot to lower the wall between worlds: The third and final massacre had to involve witches — and lots of ‘em. So she convinced her parents to round up a dozen of the most powerful witches in Mystic Falls, but things didn’t exactly go according to plan. (Let’s be real, though; do things ever go according to plan on this show?)

The witches tried to free the wayward Bennett from the grip of Expression, but when it quickly became a Bonnie-dies-or-they-die situation, Caroline (Candice Accola) foolishly stepped in to save her best friend. After nomming on one witch, the rest fell like dominoes — and thus, “the triangle is complete.” (…Fantastic.)

Caroline and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) shared a brief moment in the woods, but once Caroline realized what she had done — you know, killed 12 people and allowed Silas’ plans to come to fruition — she bawled and bounced. ”Why don’t you find someone less terrible to complain to?” Klaus told her, before Silas showed up and daggered him.
